Many people mistake the autumn colchicum for saffron with medicinal value. But autumn colchicum is a highly toxic plant, especially leaves and fruits. It contains an alkaloid called colchicine, which prevents cell division by inhibiting mitosis. Ingestion can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain, and severe organ failure and death can occur.
